Vanessa is an award-winning journalist with several years of experience writing about health-related issues affecting vulnerable communities. She joined El Tímpano after nearly two years as a KFF Health News correspondent, focusing on the health of Latinos and national policies at the intersection of immigration and health. Before, she was an investigative reporter for Searchlight New Mexico, dedicated to uncovering maternal health disparities and policing mental health in the state and its borders. She was a Bradlee Fellow and intern for The Washington Post’s local politics and government and education desks. As a Howard Center for Investigative Journalism fellow, she contributed to several award-winning investigations. Born in Ecuador, she holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland. Vanessa lives in San Francisco with her cat Fidel Cat-stro.
