El Tímpano is thrilled to announce a two-year $250,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to share our Civic Partnerships strategy with the wider local news field. This grant will support El Tímpano to create a playbook, facilitate workshops, and lead a cohort of other local news outlets to support their successful adoption of this revenue strategy.

Civic Partnerships is a strategy El Tímpano developed to transform the organization’s capacity to reach and genuinely engage “hard-to-reach” communities into a valuable service for other nonprofit agencies. The Civic Partnerships strategy generates more support for local news from nontraditional journalism funders, and in the past five years, it has propelled El Tímpano’s growth from a staff of one to a staff of 15.

At a time when new strategies to support and sustain local journalism are desperately needed, this grant will allow El Tímpano to create practical resources so that other news outlets — particularly those serving marginalized communities — can learn whether Civic Partnerships is a fit for them, and how they can put it to use to support their own sustainability.
