Salary: $62,000-$75,000; we are willing to consider candidates of varying experience levels, and adjusting the title from Coordinator to Organizer for candidates with significant community organizing experience.

El Tímpano, an award-winning local journalism and civic engagement organization, is seeking a Contra Costa Community Outreach Coordinator/Organizer responsible for expanding and deepening relationships with community leaders and residents within the region’s Latino immigrant communities, and conducting an extensive listening and relationship-building process. By building relationships with churches, schools, businesses, community-based organizations, and others, the Community Outreach Coordinator identifies and pursues opportunities to meet community members where they’re at, expands El Tímpano’s reach, and increases opportunities for community members to access local information, resources, and opportunities to be heard.

The Community Outreach Coordinator/Organizer’s role involves a variety of community organizing and outreach tactics, including identifying and sitting down with community leaders, tabling to meet, engage, and listen to residents, organizing and facilitating workshops and presentations, and gathering insights and community-rooted data on the issues and information of greatest importance to Latino immigrant communities in Contra Costa County. The Community Outreach Coordinator/Organizer will be supported by El Tímpano’s team, which has employed such strategies in Oakland and beyond using and adapting the Listening Post Collective model and playbook. 

While El Tímpano is a remote-first work environment, this position involves extensive on-the-ground activities, primarily in Contra Costa County but also beyond. Candidates must be based in or near Contra Costa County.  

El Tímpano is a fiscally sponsored project of the 501(c)(3) public charity Independent Arts & Media (IAM). All employees of El Tímpano are employees of IAM, and subject to all IAM policies and procedures. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with community leaders and institutions in Contra Costa County that are from and/or serve Latino and/or Mayan immigrants. 
  • Coordinate and lead in-person outreach events, including tabling, surveying, and workshops to introduce El Tímpano, listen to the information needs and issues of interest of Latino immigrant residents, and expand our community; regular weekend and evening work to accommodate community outreach opportunities. 
  • In partnership with colleagues, organize and facilitate engaging community programming 
  • Record activities and community insights to assess information needs and identify opportunities for partnerships, community-centered media, and iteration; utilize El Tímpano’s digital platforms and processes to enter data 
  • Collaborate with El Tímpano’s team to build relationships within the region’s Maya Mam immigrant communities 
  • Identify local resources of relevance to Contra Costa’s Latino immigrant communities and add them to El Tímpano’s resource directory
  • Other programmatic or administrative activities as they emerge to support the needs of a growing non-profit organization 

You are a great fit if you…

  • Are bilingual in English and Spanish and have significant experience working with Latino immigrant communities
  • Are familiar with Contra Costa County’s Latino immigrant communities, gathering spaces, and local organizations 
  • Have experience with community organizing or outreach and/or the ability to communicate information to a diverse audience with varying familiarity 
  • Have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, including the ability to communicate respectfully and inclusively in diverse environments with colleagues, community members, and external peers 
  • Are organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects on time, problem-solve, and communicate and adapt when iteration is needed 
  • Can travel to/from various community locations across the Bay Area, primarily in Contra Costa County (mileage reimbursed). Must have access to a vehicle and driver’s license.
  • Thrive in a start-up environment where you are expected to build things from scratch, learn and iterate as you go, take initiative and ownership of your work, collaborate with a team, and adapt as the organization grows and evolves

Compensation & Values

The annual salary is $62,000-$75,000, depending on experience.
